What Is Medicinal Cannabis?

History of medicinal use of Cannabis

The use of medicinal cannabis dates back thousands of years to ancient civilizations in Asia and the Middle East. These early cultures used the plant for its psychoactive properties, as well as for its medicinal benefits for conditions such as pain, inflammation, and insomnia.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, medicinal cannabis was widely used in Western medicine and was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia. However, with the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and racism in the early 20th century, cannabis was demonized and made illegal in the United States and many other countries.

In the latter part of the 20th century, there was a resurgence of interest in the medicinal properties of cannabis, and in recent years several countries, including Canada and several states in the United States, have legalized cannabis for medicinal use. Today, medicinal cannabis is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, as well as a variety of neurological and autoimmune disorders.

The use of medicinal cannabis in Australia dates back to the early 19th century, when it was commonly used for a variety of medical purposes. However, with the passage of the Dangerous Drugs Act in 1920, the use of cannabis was heavily restricted, and it was eventually made illegal in the country.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, there was a growing interest in the potential medicinal benefits of cannabis, and in 2016, the Australian government legalized the use of medicinal cannabis for certain medical conditions. Today, medicinal cannabis is used to treat a range of conditions!
